Our First Open Call for Members
Lovell, ME, August 3, 2026 — For the first time, Hewnoaks is opening up our Board Member application to the public – and we’d love for you to consider applying.
Since 2012, our Board has helped guide Hewnoaks through every season of growth: welcoming artists to our lakeside retreat in Lovell, stewarding the historic grounds, and building the community that makes this place what it is. As we look toward our next chapter, we want our Board to reflect the same diversity of perspectives, professions, and lived experience that make our residency community so strong.
You don’t need to be an artist, and you don’t need a long history with Hewnoaks. If our mission resonates with you, we’d love to hear from you.
Who we’re looking for:
Previous nonprofit Board experience is welcome but not required. We’re especially interested in hearing from people with experience in fundraising and donor engagement, connections to Lovell or western Maine, or backgrounds in architecture and historic preservation – but honestly, we know good ideas and real commitment come from all kinds of places. If you care about Hewnoaks’ mission and want to contribute your time and perspective, we encourage you to apply.
What Board service looks like:
Board members serve as ambassadors, advocates, and advisors for Hewnoaks – helping build relationships, share our work, and shape where the organization goes next.
A few practical details:
- Term: 3 years
- Meetings: Four 90-minute virtual Board meetings per year, typically weekdays from 12–1:30 PM, plus one annual Board Retreat
- Time commitment: About 4 hours a month at most, including any committee work
- Committees: Members may also join a committee focused on fundraising, governance, or events
- Giving: There’s no set financial requirement, but Board members are asked to make a personally meaningful annual contribution – typically $250–$1,000 – and to support our broader fundraising efforts

How to apply:
The application can be found HERE and takes about 10–15 minutes.
We’ll ask a bit about your background, your connection to Hewnoaks (if any), and where your skills and interests align with our current needs — from fundraising to communications to historic preservation and beyond.
Applications are due Friday, September 11 at 11:59 PM. We’ll review applications throughout September and follow up with select applicants in early October. Not every applicant will join the Board right away — some may be invited to serve on a committee instead, and others’ applications will stay on file as we continue to grow.

The core embodiment of Hewnoaks’ mission is the free residency program, offered through ten sessions each summer. Each season, our programming also includes retreats with partnering groups and organizations, public events, and fee-based workshops led by creative leaders.
Hewnoaks was established as a summer home and artist colony by Douglas and Marion Volk over 100 years ago. In 2012, artists and community members envisioned and reactivated the property as a contemporary artist residency, intentionally building a program shaped by those it serves. Today, Hewnoaks is governed by a board of directors that includes Hewnoaks alumni, Lovell-area community members, and arts administrators, ensuring lived experience and local perspective continue to inform and guide its vision.
