Announcing Hewnoaks' 2026 Artists-In-Residence

Lovell, ME, May 11, 2026 β€” Hewnoaks is honored to announce its invited artists for the 2026 summer residency season. Beginning in just a few short weeks, our cabins on the eastern shore of Kezar Lake in Lovell, Maine, will once again open their doors to a cohort of writers, visual artists, musicians, performance artists, and multidisciplinary practitioners – each arriving with their own questions, projects, and creative ambitions, and each given the unencumbered time and space to explore them.

Hewnoaks offers short-term, fully subsidized residencies purpose-built for artists balancing busy lives. Tucked into a landscape of towering pines and lakefront solitude, our rustic cabins provide a rare chance to disconnect from the pressures of daily life and dive deep into creative practice. There are no output requirements, no expectations to share a finished work, and no mandatory community-facing obligations. Whether residents arrive to draft a novel, edit a body of visual work, compose new music, develop a performance, or simply think, Hewnoaks is a place to become fully immersed in the creative process, whatever shape it takes.

Β

The 2026 cohort spans a wide range of disciplines and career stages. 41% of this year’s residents are writers – poets, novelists, essayists, journalists, and memoirists – and 34% are visual artists working in painting, sculpture, photography, illustration, and design. Rounding out the cohort are multidisciplinary artists, musicians and sound artists, and performance artists, whose practices contribute to the cross-disciplinary exchange that defines a season at Hewnoaks.

β€œI'm continually inspired by the creative voices this landscape has nurtured over the years, and deeply honored to steward this sanctuary. All of us at Hewnoaks are elated to welcome the 2026 cohort, a remarkable group of artists whose breadth and vision will shape this season in meaningful ways. We're grateful for the opportunity to support them as they experiment and dive deep into their work.”
β€” Beth Given-Sorensen
Executive Director, Hewnoaks Artist Residency

This year’s cohort emerged from a competitive applicant pool, reviewed by an independent jury of working artists, writers, and arts professionals whose expertise spans the disciplines represented at Hewnoaks. Each application was read carefully and discussed in depth, with jurors weighing the strength of the proposed work, the fit between the artist’s practice and what Hewnoaks can offer, and our continued commitment to supporting artists at every stage of their careers.

The 2026 cohort is, in every meaningful sense, the result of their thoughtful work – and we extend our sincere thanks to each of them for the care, rigor, and generosity they brought to the process.

We are honored to welcome five artists in the 2026 cohort through these collaborations.

About Hewnoaks
Hewnoaks Artist Residency provides artists across all disciplines and career stages unencumbered time to think, work, and experiment. We offer short-term residencies on a wooded lakeside historic property, knowing that this kind of time and space is essential to the creative process and the growth and development of artists and their work.

The core embodiment of Hewnoaks’ mission is the free residency program, offered through ten sessions each summer. Each season, our programming also includes retreats with partnering groups and organizations, public events, and fee-based workshops led by creative leaders.

Hewnoaks was established as a summer home by artists Douglas and Marion Volk over 100 years ago. In 2012, artists and community members envisioned and reactivated the property as a contemporary artist residency, intentionally building a program shaped by those it serves. Today, Hewnoaks is governed by a board of directors that includes Hewnoaks alumni, Lovell-area community members, and arts administrators, ensuring lived experience and local perspective continue to inform and guide its vision.
