Hewnoaks Artist Residency >
About Us
Hewnoaks provides artists across all disciplines and career stages unencumbered time to think, work, and experiment.
We offer short-term residencies on a wooded lakeside historic property, knowing that this kind of time and space is essential to the creative process and the growth and development of artists and their work.
Our seasonal programs and events include:
- Short-term artist residencies offered through an application & jury process
- Fee-based workshops in collaboration with lead artists and facilitators
- Opening Session – a week of hands-on stewardship to help dewinterize the property
- Sustaining Sessions – open-access, fee-based fall residency sessions that directly support our mission
- Retreats with Partnering Organizations or Institutions, recent examples include: Boston University and Words of Fire
- Partnership Residency with Indigo Arts Alliance serving black and brown artists
- Public events at Hewnoaks and in the community with partnering organizations
Hewnoaks is run by a small professional staff and governed by a dedicated volunteer board of directors. Our annual operating budget is approximately $300,000, supported primarily by individual donations, foundations, and program fees.
The University of Maine Foundation owns the Hewnoaks property and generously maintains the buildings and grounds where we operate. The University was gifted the Hewnoaks property by an heir to the estate in the early 2000’s, and helped a group of artists and community members establish the residency program in 2012.
Hewnoaks is supported in part by The Maine Arts Commission, which receives support in part from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
