Beth Given-Sorensen is a seasoned nonprofit leader with over 15 years of experience in arts administration, fundraising, and strategic growth. She joins Hewnoaks Artist Residency after serving as the Development Director at One Longfellow Square (OLS), where she was an integral part of the leadership team that successfully grew the organization into a $1M operation during its 15th anniversary year. While at OLS, Beth also spearheaded the launch of the Longfellow Emerging Artist Fellowship, reflecting her deep commitment to supporting early-career artists.

Prior to her tenure at OLS, Beth served for over five years as the Development Director at Portland Stage, one of Maine’s largest professional theaters. There, she oversaw all fundraising initiatives, including the successful completion of a $6M capital campaign. Her background also includes nearly a decade in New York City, where she held roles at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and Jujamcyn Theaters, and served as Managing Director at Arktype, a production and touring company for experimental performing artists.

Stepping into the role of Executive Director at Hewnoaks fulfills a long-held professional dream for Beth to lead a multidisciplinary residency. Her career is defined by a fervent belief in the power of the arts and a track record of building sustainable, community-serving cultural institutions.

A Maine resident since 2017, Beth holds a B.A. from Pitzer College and an M.A. in Performance Studies from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She lives in Portland with her husband and their sweet chiweenie, Pearl.

ABOUT HEWNOAKS

Hewnoaks Artist Residency provides artists across all disciplines and career stages unencumbered time to think, work, and experiment. We offer short-term residencies on a wooded lakeside historic property, knowing that this kind of time and space is essential to the creative process and the growth and development of artists and their work.

The core embodiment of Hewnoaks’ mission is the free residency program, offered through ten sessions each summer. Each season, our programming also includes retreats with partnering groups and organizations, public events, and fee-based workshops led by creative leaders.

Hewnoaks was established as a summer home and artist colony by Douglas and Marion Volk over 100 years ago. In 2012, artists and community members envisioned and reactivated the property as a contemporary artist residency, intentionally building a program shaped by those it serves. Today, Hewnoaks is governed by a board of directors that includes Hewnoaks alumni, Lovell-area community members, and arts administrators, ensuring lived experience and local perspective continue to inform and guide its vision.
