"I didn't know how much sense artist residencies made until I went to Hewnoaks. As with many artists, doubts about my work's validity are capable of holding me up for long periods of time. But being able to experiment, process and reassure myself of the deeper values within my work in real time without the constant distractions of daily life was a complete game changer for me and my practice. Stepping outside of my normal patterns and space has completely opened new possibilities for me, and I don't know how I would have found that place without Hewnoaks." -2021 Hewnoaks Resident

Calling all artists! Hewnoaks 2023 application period opens NEXT WEEK on 2/1 (deadline: 2/28).

Interested in spending unstructured time working, wandering, studying, and dreaming on the shores of Kezar Lake in Maine? Each summer, more than 50 artists of all disciplines disconnect from their busy lives for 1-week or 10-day residencies between mid-June - early-October. Artists from all over are welcome, however, 75% of spaces are reserved for those who live in Maine. We also have a limited number of parent artist cash stipends to cover childcare costs at home thanks to @sustainablearts 🧡

Spread the word and watch for the application link on 2/1!

The application period opens Wednesday, February 1 with a deadline of Tuesday, February 28. Keep an eye out for further updates - join our mailing list so you don’t miss out! We'll post the summer residency schedule and a link to our Submittable application on our website's "apply" page in the coming weeks.

Once again we're offering limited funds to support parent artists who need help with child care while they are at the residency. We will also again partner with the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance to honor past director Joshua Bodwell with a cash fellowship for an emerging Maine writer.

Artists create the glue that holds civil society together in good times and bad - opening dialogue, inspiring creative thinking, enabling the sharing of values and perspectives. At a moment when understanding is at a premium, please consider an end-of-year contribution to Hewnoaks if you can. Every gift directly supports our mission of bringing artists together to explore their unique visions of the world in an atmosphere of caring, generous exchange. (Link in bio)

Support Hewnoaks as the sun sets on our ninth season!

After two years of pandemic disruptions, we resumed a full-capacity schedule in 2022, hosting 54 resident artists from across the US. We inaugurated new partnerships and held our largest ever public event. While it's sad to turn the page on such a joyful summer, we're heartened that Hewnoaks' artist-centered mision uplifted so many lives this year.

Please help us continue to offer the precious gift of time and space at Hewnoaks to future generations of artists. Visit hewnoaks.org/donate (link in bio) to make your gift of ANY size today!
