This is my cousin Agatha. She’s a mother of two toddlers and a nurse in Montreal. A few days ago she called me to tell me she had been moved to a “Covid floor” at the #glenhospital, formerly a women’s cancer wing. She had suddenly realized that she was in a room among my photographs. The work she was referring to is from a project called #nightgarden that I worked on 2014-2015 during my mother’s battle with cancer. This one wing of the hospital now has an installation with 30 images from “Night Garden” and #becausethesky... The work is about photographing blind - in complete darkness, without flash, but the larger themes of these series are love, loss and regeneration.

I’m thinking of these images that are at once so personal, and of my sweetest cousin with her contagious laugh as a young mother in this high risk situation. Both of our mums, sisters, had cancer at the same time, and for both it was their last summer here on earth. There are many layers here, of mothers and daughters, of carers and the sick, of families, of reality and hope... I feel very emotional and wonder what it must be like to be on that floor right now surrounded by images of the night and it’s abundant light... So much gratitude to Agatha and all those on the front lines of the pandemic... Mural “Bells,” then, “Shy” and “When you’re not here, this is how we’ll talk.” #gratitude #muhcglen #covid19 #artstories #contemporaryphotography #cousins #heroes

Today is the opening of my new work at @ebenhaines' @shelterinplacegallery. A beautifully detailed 1:12 scale exhibition space. I'm floored by the amount of care he has put into building it and honored to have work in it! Cheers everyone! 🍻
